With the New Year firmly under way, I began to think about what lies ahead for me. I began to wonder how much I was dedicated to achieving my goals and what I would sacrifice to reach them.
One of the most famous self help books is the well known volume written by Napoleon Hill. It is called “Think and Grow Rich”. Although the book is unashamedly about wealth, it is also relevant to all parts of our lives. It was written in the 1930s and considered to be one of the most important books of its genre. Napoleon Hill outlines 16 keys to success in the book which are proven to be drivers of success.
One of my favourite stories in the book revolves around commitment. It references the story of the burning ships.
The story dates from 1519, when a Spanish expedition led by Hernán Cortés landed in Mexico. Cortés knew his crew was already exhausted after the long sea journey, but he had to motivate them to succeed in the new land. So he ordered the scuttling of the ships they arrived in.
Napoleon Hill uses this story to illustrate commitment. He puts forward the notion that without an easy way out, we are far more likely to succeed in our endeavours. It's a case of either sinking or swimming. Obviously the best way forward is not to sink.
With true commitment and unwavering faith in my abilities, I firmly believe that anything can be achieved. Well, maybe I won't make the All Blacks, but I will achieve my goals using commitment and faith.
When I talk about faith in this context, it is not a religious faith. It is the absolute trust I have in myself. I commit to the goal and have a plan. I have faith that I will achieve my goal and I will watch those ships engulfed in flames higher than the moon. If I do this, there is no reason to think about failure. The future is mine.
I firmly believe that can can all achieve our goals.
I firmly believe that we are all able to fearlessly illuminate our future paths.
I firmly believe that nobody is equipped better than you, to be YOU.
I firmly believe in the power of eliminating doubt.
So sit down, grab a pen and paper and map out YOUR future.

Let's embrace commitment.
Let's reject procrastination.
Let's embrace faith.
Let's reject doubt.
Let's tell this game of life that 2024 is our year, my year, YOUR year.
